VALENTINE

ARLENE MCFARLANE

Watching this catfight was like witnessing a match in the salon between my screwball employees, Max and Phyllis. Only difference was, the two of them slung insults at each other, not wine glasses and paint.

I ducked, narrowly missing an incoming tube of green dye. That landed on Merry’s chest, the lime green goop sticking to her T-shirt.

“Hey!” Merry shot up from her chair, scanning the room with a sharp eye. “Who do I need to waterboard for throwing that?”

No one answered. They were all too busy trying to kill each other.

Merry looked down at herself, pulling her shirt out at the hem. “The last time I wore a mix of greens was when I was in my camos in a German forest on a top-secret mission. Not one of my more pleasant memories since I’d slithered on my belly, escaping a five-legged race at a Neo-Nazi All You Can Eat Oktoberfest gathering between Hitler’s former Eagle’s Nest and his summer home. It wouldn’t have been so bad except I was tied to the hind leg of a goat, and it seemed more interested in eating berries off the trees than running for its life.”

Kate whipped her apple core across the room at the wrestling crowd, displaying a “take action” side I’d never seen before. Then she relaxed her shoulders and leaned toward Merry, once again the demure mama. “You’ve led the most interesting life, Merry. Top-secret missions, neo-Nazi gatherings, watersliding on Kim Jong-un’s yacht, leading a troop of Girl Scouts…”

Merry swiped a blob of paint from her chest and smeared it on a paper towel. “Yeah, but if you get a chance, don’t go watersliding on Kim Jong-un’s yacht. Women mysteriously losing their bikini tops happens one too many times at his parties.” She gave a know-what-I-mean? nod. “Some party animals consider anything edible. They really need to do something about the food shortage there…”

She hushed her voice. “But between us, my Girl Scouts are more dangerous and scarier than any humans I’ve encountered.”

We all turned to Franki who was marching toward us from the far corner of the room, hands curled into fists, hair the color of Ronald McDonald’s, a grim look on her gold face.

“Wait,” Merry whispered. “I take that back.”

“Look at this, guys…” Franki sequestered us to a quiet spot away from the airborne items while Amy attempted to break up the fighting crowd.

“What did you find?” I asked, trying my darnedest to refrain from examining her shocking red hair. After all, the right filler could fix that mess.

“This!” She unfolded her hand and displayed a blue pill. “Let me introduce you to another Viagra vitamin.”

Merry croaked. “If that’s a vitamin, then I’m Kim Jong-un’s uncle.”

“Exactly!” Kate added. “These pills are popping up everywhere. But who do they belong to? And are they for sure Viagra?”

“They certainly aren’t Aleve.” Franki grunted, then added under her breath, “Which that commie Nadezhda knows about all too well.” She eyed the crowd with interest. “But someone here is carrying them.
